Installing a chimney cap will keep small owls, like Screech Owls, from nesting in a chimney. Like many wildlife, owls are losing their habitat. ![]() It can catch prey in complete darkness even through dense vegetation and snow. But Barn Owls’ ability to find prey by sound alone is the best of any animal tested. Like all owls, they have exceptional vision in low light. Instead, they make a harsh scream that lasts about two seconds. They are strictly nocturnal and can be seen soaring over fields and grasslands at night looking for small mammals. The flat pale face and wide black eyes of a Barn Owl give it a haunting look. They are no bigger than a pint glass and have speckled plumage that blends seamlessly into the nooks of tree trunks. Mated pairs use the tremolo in the breeding season to stay in touch. The tremolo lasts three to five seconds but can contain 35 different notes. Far from smooth hooting sounds, screech owls make an eerie even-pitched trill, called a tremolo. Undignified, but effective.Įastern Screech Owls can be found in every Indiana forest. They grasp the bark with their beak and talons, flapping their wings and walking up the trunk. Their call sounds like the phrase: “ Who Cooks for You? Who Cooks for You All?” Young Barred Owls can climb trees. If you’ve seen any movie or TV show featuring an owl, you’ve heard the Barred Owl’s song. In the evening, you may hear a loud agitated cawing as crows gather en masse to harass a Great Horned Owl caught unawares.Ī soulful gaze and delicately striped brown and white plumage make Barred Owls a beautiful sight, though hard to spot. These owls are a top predator of American crows. Their deadly grip is strong enough to sever the spine of large prey. Their prey includes ospreys, falcons, and even other owls. They also have a recognizable call, a deep hoo huhoo, hooo, hoooh. The Great Horned Owl has the quintessential ear tufts and intimidating yellow-eyed stare that many think of when envisioning an owl. Here are four owls commonly found in our regional forests and grasslands (and maybe even your neighborhood). That makes late winter the “hooting season.” Because of this, they call more frequently to attract mates or claim territories. Owls start breeding in late January and early February. But when they do make noise, their calls are distinctive. ![]() ![]() Considering exactly the same compression, number of pixels, and color depth for two images, different graphical complexity of the original images may also result in very different file sizes after compression due to the nature of compression algorithms. Images with the same number of pixels and color depth can have very different compressed file size. A compression algorithm stores either an exact representation or an approximation of the original image in a smaller number of bytes that can be expanded back to its uncompressed form with a corresponding decompression algorithm. Images can be compressed in various ways, however. The size of raster image files is positively correlated with the number of pixels in the image and the color depth (bits per pixel). A common method for displaying digital image information has historically been rasterization. Image files are composed of digital data in one of these formats so that the data can be displayed on a digital (computer) display or printed out using a printer. A 3D image can be represented within a 2D format, as in a stereogram or autostereogram, but this 3D image will not be a true light field, and thereby may cause the vergence-accommodation conflict. You need to go into the configuration of the remote PC and navigate to the “Folders” tab to set it up. Paul, there’s a setting in the MacOS RDP app that allows you to configure a local drive that can be used to pass files between the VM and the local machine. And for those organizations that need this kind of solution, that’s a good thing. You can interchange files via that “Upload new file” button in the navigation bar, of course.Įven with this light level of testing, it’s pretty clear that Microsoft is delivering a mostly consistent Windows 365 experience across multiple devices and platforms. ![]() But it seemed responsive, even in windowed mode, and applications launched quickly. ![]() I only tested this briefly, and with touch support, not a keyboard and/or mouse. As with the Chromebook, I was asked to access local resources, which I allowed, and the Cloud PC desktop appeared in a browser tab. However, I couldn’t get it to work: The app reported that “managed resources have not yet been downloaded,” and each time I tried the “Download now” link, I got a “Download failed” warning. As with the Mac, I downloaded and installed the native Microsoft Remote Desktop client, signed into in my browser and got a subscription URL, and then pasted that into Remote Desktop. iPadįinally, I tried accessing Windows 365 on my iPad Air. It’s possible that the web experience is a bit slower than the native app, but it honestly felt pretty good. (In addition to the navigation bar’s “Upload new file” button, which also provides file interchange.) Here again, the experience was mostly seamless, and there was a way in File Explorer to access the local file system. I enabled all four.Īfter authenticating, my Cloud PC appeared in the browser tab and everything, as Microsoft likes to say, was right where I left it.įor a more seamless experience, I went full screen and unpinned the navigation bar, which otherwise takes up a lot of space. The first screen I saw was interesting: I could optionally configure the Cloud PC to access my Chromebook’s clipboard, microphone, and printer, and enable a preview version of file transfer capabilities. And then I opened my Cloud PC in the browser. This was the simplest onboarding experience: I just browsed to the Windows 365 website in Chrome and signed into my Microsoft 365 commercial account. And I chose the web client, just to see what that was like, though I suppose the Android version of Microsoft Remote Desktop would work as well. To test Windows 365 on a Chromebook, I chose the HP Chromebook x360 14 that I sort-of reviewed recently. The applications and windows I previously had open were still open, and the taskbar customizations I made, such as pinning Notepad and Paint, were retained as expected. Perhaps yesterday’s performance issues were just a day one problem.Īnd as promised, everything was right where I left it. And for whatever it’s worth, the performance is terrific, at least for running a handful of bundled apps like Edge and Notepad. (This might be available optionally, I’m not all that familiar with Remote Desktop on Mac.)įrom here, Windows operates normally. What’s missing is the File Explorer integration I saw in the Windows client, which lets you pass files between the remote and local computers. You can, of course, mouse to the top of the screen to display the Mac menu bar and the window controls for Remote Desktop. When you connect to the Cloud PC, it open in full screen, which gives the impression that you’re running Windows 10 natively on the Mac. When all that is done, the Cloud PC will show up in the app as it does on Windows. Then, open Remote Desktop, choose Workspace > Add Workspace, paste in the subscription URL, authenticate, and then add your Cloud PC to the app. Similar to the Windows version, you then need to get a subscription URL from the Windows 365 website. To get started with Windows 365, I downloaded and installed Microsoft Remote Desktop from the Mac Store. So in the spirit of my earlier mile-high examination of Windows 365, here’s what it’s like to access this service on these other platforms. But what about other platforms like Mac, Chromebook, and iPad?Įach presents its own challenges, but it’s interesting to note that Microsoft makes a native Remote Desktop client on Mac and iPad (and on Android), while Chromebook users will typically access the service via the web client. Yesterday, I looked at the experience of using Windows 365 on Windows 10/11 using the Remote Desktop app. ![]() ![]() ![]() Top with remaining crumb mixture and bake for 45 minutes.
